Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting Feb 1, 2021
President Mike LaBarbera called the meeting to order at 1:03 PM, with 21 members seated well-spaced around the Activity Center’s auditorium, and had us stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
There were: no new members announced; reminders to pay 2021 club dues and/or participate that day’s 50-50 raffle; and then a motion and second to approve the minutes of our Jan 4th, 2021 meeting minutes.
Next Larry Webster reported on club finances noting that that we had donated $150 for 10 wreaths to be distributed at Marana Veterans Cemetery, which left a balance of $863 in the club’s credit union account.
Then President Mike: presented member John Farmer a certificate of appreciation for his volunteer activities with the club; discussed prospects for starting post-Covid visits to veterans living at Copper Health Rehab; announced that the Fitness Center’s flagpole is being worked on to repair its halyard and should be operational again soon.
This was followed by two extended discussions of: getting vaccinated for Covid through the VA health care system (must be at least 75 years and registered with the VA, call 520-629-4729 for latest info); and the club’s possible participation in creating a 75-foot Legacy Walkway surfaced with engraved bricks, to serve as both a community amenity and club fund-raiser.
Then veteran service officer John Baca, of Chapter 4 of Disabled American Veterans on Ina Rd gave an informative talk, noting that DAV exists solely to assist vets with activities ranging from filing claims with the VA to resolving speeding tickets. He emphasized that assistance was not limited just to combat vets, and that veterans should ensure they are familiar with symptoms of health conditions that may have originated while on active duty but only manifest years later. There is no time limit on filing VA health claims arising from exposure to Agent Orange, for example, high blood pressure and a variety of other health concerns. Baca stressed that it can seem like a slow process to complete the correct claim form accurately (one of the primary functions of veteran service officers) but that the VA system also is “pretty efficient” once claims are filed correctly. John Baca 520-471-4393
The February, 2021 meeting adjourned at 2:15 PM.
The next meeting is scheduled for 1:00 PM, Monday, 1 March, 2021.
