Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting, Jan 4, 2021
A 50-50 raffle was underway as members arrived for the meeting, which President Mike LaBarbera called to order at 1 P.M. in SCOV’s Activity Center Auditorium and then led 28 attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.
First time attendees Bob Jones and Jim Goodwin stood to be recognized.
Current club membership totals 182.
The club now has $834.91 in its deposit account.
A discussion to support Wreaths Across America was reviewed. They will buy one wreath for each one donated for $15 from now until Jan 15th. A motion to purchase 10 wreaths was suggested by Matt Tombre and seconded by Jeannette Moore. Unanimous vote approved.
There was a discussion about the US Flag not being flown within SCOV on all days the facility buildings are open. Member Jim Goodwin spoke with Pam Sarpalius and he was told when winds are high or inclement weather the flags are not flown. She stated the flags wear out quickly and there is not enough funds in the budget for new flags. Jim has been raising and lowering the flag on his own at the AFC during COVID-19 closures to show others SCOV is still alive. All members expressed disappointment in the process and agreed the US Flag should be flown every day SCOV is open, even during high winds and inclement weather. Mike LaBarbera commented that purchasing US Flags with Veteran Club funds was not within our charter. Some members suggested they would buy flags on their own and donating them to SCOV, so they can fly every day.
Election of 2021 club officers listed was motioned for approval by Jim Kasierski and seconded by Larry Clark. Vote was unanimously approved.
VP - Ian Friedlander
Treasurer - Larry Webster
Secretary - Tom Bethea
Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Jim Steinmetz, Ed Caine, Jim Goodwin and Larry Webster for volunteering in a club outreach.
A fundraiser was brought up by Mike LaBarbera to sell 4"x8 or 8"x8" engraved bricks to the community to create the SCOV Legacy Walkway. A brick path would be laid at the Catalina Vista with proceeds being donated to Veteran organizations. Many members expressed interest in this project. Mike LaBarbera will talk to Mark Wade about this issue.
Guest speaker Jon Helminiak was introduced and gave a powerpoint presentation on leading 15 C-47 aircraft from the US to Normandy for the the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.
Meeting was adjourned at 2:10 PM.
