Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting, 5 Apr, 2021
President Mike LaBarbera called the meeting to order at 1:00 PM with 26 members present, standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.
New members Kurt Klucking, Charles Means and Vern Petterson were recognized. Current club membership stands at 205.
The club’s March, 2021 meeting minutes were motioned, seconded, and approved.
Club treasurer Larry Webster reported that he reviewed the club’s financial accounts with Larry Gray and Tony Wong and confirmed a credit union account balance of $1,111 at the beginning of April.
President Mike’s general reported a five-member honor guard of club members presented a folded American flag to the widow of Ode Satterfield, a Korean war veteran. The SCOV’s Legacy Walkway, with 72 bricks have been purchased and more orders coming in daily. Our president also has met with the leaders of nearby veterans clubs in Marana and the Sunflower community. Joint meeting and social gatherings with these two groups are being planned.
The president’s report ended with an invitation to members to suggest speakers and subjects for upcoming club meetings and an announcement that, due to the renovation of the Activity Center, club meetings will move to Catalina Vista starting in July.
Our April speaker, Sgt 1st Class Harvey, a 20-year active duty and reservist member of the Army, now serving as a recruiter, then gave us a spirited review of some of the changes in military recruiting, and active duty service in general, since the 1960s and 1970s. Some examples:
Service members retiring after 20 years draw 40% of base pay. Active members can divert 1% to 5% of their pay into an IRA with DOD matches. 36 months of active duty will start service members’ eligibility for GI Bill education benefits E-5 with dependents stipend.
90% of recruits have a high school diploma.
The high-tech nature of today’s battlefield, from body-armor to weaponry to night-vision gear, means a higher proportion of overall personnel serve in special forces-type units. April attendees both enjoyed and learned a lot from Sgt Harvey’s remarks.
The meeting concluded with the 50/50 raffle drawing and was adjourned at 2:05 PM.
The next meeting is scheduled for 1:00 PM, Monday, 3 May, 2021.
