Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting, 2 Nov, 2020
A 50-50 raffle was underway as members arrived for the meeting, which President Mike LaBarbera called to order at 1 P.M. in SCOV’s Activity Center Auditorium and then led 21 appropriately-separated attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.
New member Keith Jacobs stood to be introduced.
President Mike invited interested members to join him in calling on new owners moving into in SCOV by way of sweeping for new fellow veterans. Current club membership totals 173.
The club now has $562.11 in its deposit account after purchasing $56.55 in provisions for its Veterans Day BBQ.

On November 11, SCOV will be sending a link to a short Veterans Day video posted on SCOV’s website, and later that day a six-member club team will be serving BBQ and trimmings to Tucson homeless veterans. Hats off to Ed Caine, Ian Friedlander, Bill Livingston, Jeannette Moore, Jim Steinmetz and President Mike for this event which may be covered by TV and newspaper reporters.
In a similar vein, the club has collected quite a number of clothing and hygiene items for homeless veterans, and still could use a couple more pickup-owning volunteers to help deliver same to the Old Pueblo, on a date to be determined.
The December meeting will be non-standard, held on Dec 12 in the Activity Center Auditorium to watch the Army-Navy football game. Let President Mike know if you’ll attend, and plan to bring your own patio-type chair, TV tray, and refreshments.
Just prior to the featured speaker’s remarks, Eric Brown rose to encourage club members to investigate Arizona’s state and federal Veterans Cemeteries both, where the cost of final arrangements can be minimal for veterans and spouses if organized in advance.
Robert “Buzz” Hickox, an Army veteran and 8-year VA outreach specialist gave an informative talk on how best to reduce the 6,000 annual veteran suicides, emphasizing the value of the VA’s “Be Connected” programs, being alert for suicide warning signs, and asking direct, even blunt, questions of those suspected of being suicidal, especially younger veterans.
Meeting was adjourned at 1:55 PM.
