Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting, 6 Jan, 2020
President Mike LaBarbera called the meeting to order at 1 P.M. and led almost 40 attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, and then offered a quick review of installing flags near the entries of different SCOV public facilities.
It was moved, seconded, and passed that December’s meeting minutes be approved as posted on the club’s website.
Treasurer Dennis Reynolds then gave a short financial history of the club and explained that collection of 2020 club dues was ongoing.
President Mike recalled his conversation about positioning flags around SCOV with general manager Mark Wade, and announced the departure of VP Pat Stone (and called for a club member to volunteer as replacement VP).
Ted Tindall reviewed efforts to ID more elderly SCOV vets who might need an occasional assistance, noting that a “Helpful Hands” organization already was well established in the community and that our club might coordinate volunteer efforts with same.
President Mike reprized the club’s efforts to assist at Comin’ Home Veteran transitional housing, showing pics of the large volume of already-contributed toiletries, to be delivered by volunteers on Jan 13, and describing efforts to sway local pizza vendors to donate meals to Comin’ Home on a periodical basis (reports to follow).
The club also is seeking volunteers to assist in the HUD-mandated Point In Time national count of people experience homelessness. Volunteer training will be held 6-8 PM on Monday, Jan 27, with the actual count going forward in downtown Tucson on Wednesday, Jan 29, in groups of four-eight people each.
Secretary Tom Bethea reported on pending volunteer calls on residents of the well-appointed Arizona Veterans Home, Tucson. He’d like to arrange a first visit within next 30 days and invites anyone interested to contact him directly at 773-653-4580 or [email protected]. These get togethers should be rewarding and educational for residents and volunteers both.
Tom Shambo, board member of Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery Foundation, Marana, gave a history of the development of the relatively new veterans cemetery in Marana and explained distinctions between this and the national veterans cemetery in Phoenix. Importantly, the state veterans cemeteries are largely maintained and upgraded by volunteers, whom the foundation is continuously soliciting. Marana State Veterans Cemetery administrator Bonnie Dudelston then explained various procedures for registering vets for no-fee (and $780 for spouses) internment at Marana.
The meeting adjourned on schedule at 1400 Hrs.
We look forward to seeing all hands at the next club meeting, 1PM, Feb 3, 2020, at Catalina Vista.
