Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting, Feb 3, 2020
President Mike LaBarbera called the meeting to order at 1 P.M. and led 26 attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Roger Misgen’s quoting a civil war-era tribute to the flag.
Treasurer Dennis recapped the current tax status of the club, noting that members’ contributions currently are not tax deductible. Current balance in the account is $576.
President Mike made a motion that membership approve the opening of a no-fee checking account at Pima Federal Credit Union, which was seconded and approved.
Mike LaBarbera motioned that Ian Friedlander be the club’s new VP. Motion was seconded and approved.
Club certificates of appreciation were awarded to Brian Goff and Ian Friedlander.
Several members shared stories about visits to Copper Health Rehab and the Comin' Home temporary Veteran housing unit in Tucson. Outings were rewarding for both residents and Veteran Club members.
President Mike and Jeannette Moore related their experiences as members of the Point in Time survey of Tucson’s homeless population on Jan. 29, which started before dawn and took them through several downtown parks and cemeteries, providing a clear appreciation of how difficult life on the street can be.
President Mike asked for volunteers to join him after meeting to deliver a US Flag to the entry of The Views restaurant, and reminded members of Friday’s Happy Hour there following the Sun City Club Fair in the Activity Center.
Member Dave Thomas then started a short conversation by asking how the club’s funds were being spent, which covered cost-sharing for pizza to the Comin' Home temporary Veteran housing unit and haircuts for resident Veterans. This discussion produced suggestions that funds should be disbursed rather than banked, and that individual contributions to the club are welcome.
At this point, Jeff Scott, and his supervisor, Monica Durand from Old Pueblo Community Services gave presentations describing their housing operations aimed at assisting local homeless once again become productive members of society. Stable housing is a first priority, followed by ensuring that homeless Veterans, especially, know what resources are available to them, such as securing IDs, needed health care, hygiene products and clothing. Jeff stated that the Tucson area’s Coming Home programs have been recognized as effective and adopted by other communities around the country. Jeff and Monica received a round of applause from our membership.
The February meeting concluded at 2:15 with Dennis Reynolds encouraging members to reach out to SCOV vets who may not know about our club.
