Veterans Club SCOV
Minutes of Meeting Mar 1, 2021
President Mike LaBarbera called the meeting to order at 1:05 PM after issues with the Activity Center microphone were resolved. There were 20 members present, seated separately around the auditorium, and we stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Approval of February, 2021 club meeting minutes was moved, seconded, and confirmed.
Two new members attended for first time, Roger Benasutti and Chuck Jarrett.
Larry Webster reviewed the club’s finances, with our credit union account showing a balance of $1004.55 after February’s disbursements. Club roster how has 198 members, with 13 new members joining in prior month.
There was a short discussion of members’ experiences seeking and securing Covid vaccinations, with no one reporting significant difficulties.
President Mike reviewed the need for seniors to set up a folder or binder for spouses and beneficiaries to hold all important papers, financial records, named beneficiaries, VA burial instructions and the like, and then review all the above with one’s spouse.
Next came a review of Sun City’s Legacy Walkway fundraiser project in which 75 feet of poorly maintained asphalt sidewalk, between The Views north patio and the pickleball courts, would be replaced with engraved bricks. These would be sold to contributors for $125 each with three lines of lettering and/or a logo, and $25 returning to Vets Club.
Tom Shambo presented an informative talk and video describing the Marana Veterans Cemetery. Nicole Contreras manages day-to-day operations at the cemetery and reviewed the current layout and future phases, as well as how typical veteran funerals and burials are scripted.
Tom Shambo, member of the board of the cemetery’s foundation then presented a history of how the cemetery was created by three civic-minded vets with a financial boost from the VA. Tom emphasized that Marana is a state cemetery and recommended that veterans pre-register to establish their eligibility for internment. Requirements include an honorable discharge from the military.
Tom Shambo concluding by noting that one of the cemeteries more moving ceremonies, a group internment of veterans, would take place at 1000 hrs on 17 April, and that the cemetery foundation’s major annual fundraiser would be held at a Tucson casino on 11/6/2021. Call 520-638-4869 for more information.
A discussion of Missing In America Program activities at the cemetery are scheduled for April 17. Internment of unclaimed Veterans travel, with motorcycle escort, from the funeral home and military honors at the cemetery.
The day’s 50/50 raffle was won by Treasurer Larry, who promptly deposited those winnings into the club kitty. Well done Larry!
The March, 2021 meeting adjourned at 2:00 PM.
The next meeting is scheduled for 1:00 PM, Monday, 5 April, 2021.
